Google’s Android 1.5 is facing a tough competition in catching up with iPhone 3.0 in US, but not everywhere else. China absolutely is Google’s biggest hope.
China’s mobile released its version of mobile operation sytem recently, which is based on Google’s Android platform. With more than 400M subscribers, China Mobile failed to made agreement with Apple for its iPhone. As the result, China Mobile might be the largest operator for Android soon.
Besides OMS, several manufactors had reported plans to release Anroid based phone in China, of cause, not only for China Mobile. This makes China the biggest potential market for Android and most likely will not face the same level of competition it faced in US with Apple.
With a large resources pool of expereinces Java developers, Android platform is far more popular than iPhone in the development communities. Not only that, the Chinese operators and government all like the open source nature of the platform, so they can take over the control. I met lots of developers who are excited with Android development while I was in China one month ago. All of them were Java developers.

What if Google lose? If you don’t need to win, then doesn’t matter. But, with so many investment and too many cash in hand, it took a while for me to find out about how important Android is to Google. The reason is simple: Google needs to win, and it is not easy.
It is a big bet for Google now. Android is important, I heard it, I read it, I saw it, I felt it. So pressure is in. Weeks after iPhone 3.0 announcement, and 1.5 month before iPhone 3.0 release, weeks before Palm’s Pre, Android 1.5 release is a in a tough window. Now everybody’s eyes are on the head to head competition between Android 1.5 and iPhone 3.0. It is the highest stake Google didn’t experienced in years.
Even if Android cannot build a momentum, as far as Android doesn’t look like a loser like the G1 performance, it will be good enough for the summer because more Android phones are coming up later this year. However, there are more worse cases, like trailing behand Pre, or Sybian, Windows Mobile, and so on. This is not the search market, Android’s competitors had been trying to beat it up every since its released. I do beleive most of them will die no matter that. But What if Android become the No. 4 or No.5 Mobile platform? It will be big lose.
So Google has to work hard, than doing Chrome, Gmail, then YuTube, than ever. Believe or not, check out Google IO, and watch out for all the Google Android related actions.

Google just released its 1.5 version of Android plaform days ago. It added lots of new features. But can Android 1.5 catching up with iPhone 3.0 which likely will be relased at June? Even though Apple still keep very quiet about the detail of its 3.0 version of iPhone, tons of rumors about iPhone 3.0 had been released at blogsphere.
My biggest questions is about how soon the handset built o 1.5 version of Android can be released to the market, especially the handset at Europe and China. It is clear that iPhone 3.0 could reach the consumer soon. On feature side, 1.5 have lots of imporvement over previous verison, but still far from a new revolution. So time to market is critical in its competition with iPhone 3.0
